Najbardziej znanym wydarzeniem jest atak osmańskiego admirała i korsarza Hayreddina Barbarossy (który był Grekiem/Albańczykiem w służbie tureckiej) na port Naoussa (XVI w.). Piraci pod wodzą Barbarossy dokonali brutalnego najazdu, podczas którego porwali część lokalnej ludności i zniszczyli wenecką fortecę w porcie, co pozwoliło im przejąć kontrolę nad szlakami handlowymi. To wydarzenie jest do dziś upamiętniane corocznym Festiwalem Pirackim w Naoussa.
Współcześnie na Morzu Egejskim możemy żeglować bezpiecznie, nie spotkamy tu piratów a głównym ryzykiem, jakie musimy kalkulować przed rejsem, jest wiatr meltemi, który bywa bardzo silny.
