Pokłady boczne opadają w dół w kierunku rufy. Na wysokości stanowiska sternika pokłady boczne obniżają się do poziomu podłogi w kokpicie. Zapewnia to wyjątkowo bezpieczne wyjście z kokpitu na pokład – jedno z najbardziej wrażliwych miejsc na każdej łodzi pod względem bezpieczeństwa w drodze. W 440 to przejście wydaje się niezwykle bezpieczne i nie wymaga wysiłku oraz uciążliwego schylania się pod. bimini.
Sterując można usiąść na zewnętrznym siedzeniu bardzo blisko burty jachtu, mając tym samym świetną widoczność do przodu. Dwa samozaciskowe kabestany Harken są umieszczone od wewnętrznej strony, dzięki czemu sternik lub załoga mają do nich szybki dostęp.
Ponadto projektanci SO 440 nadali priorytet ruchowi pieszemu w kokpicie od pawęży aż do zejściówki, tworząc asymetryczny kokpit. Zejściówka umieszczona jest nieco z lewej strony, ławki w kokpicie także nie są symetryczne, co dobrze widać na rysunku z rzutem pokładu. Lewą stroną kierowany jest ruch, a po prawej możemy z ławki kokpitowej uzyskać leżankę.
Siedzenia w kopicie są wygodne, bo zrębnice są wyjątkowo wysokie, dając dobre podparcie dla pleców.
Godne zauważenia jest także stosunkowo niskie zamocowanie bomu do masztu, aby ułatwić dostęp do standardowego grota.
